LASO Mission: "Dedicated to the Advancement of Our Culture and the Preservation of Our Identity."
The Latin American Student Organization (LASO) was founded in 1988. It was originally known as the Puerto Rican Student Organization, but due to the increasingly growing diverse Latin American student population at Northeastern University, the organization's name was changed.
Since its inception, LASO's goals have been to promote a positive image of Latin American culture, to inspire, develop, and promote leadership within the membership, to improve the college experience for Northeastern University's Latin American students and the overall student body, and to contribute to the progress of the Latin American population beyond Northeastern University through various outreach programs.
LASO has been known around the Northeastern campus for coordinating successful events such as the Service Staff Appreciation Day which was created to honor Northeastern's service workers and for bringing diversity-based events such as the play Platanos and Collard Greens. In addition, LASO members also know how to get down with such events as Latin Night Pt. 1: Seduction. With the help of other prominent student organizations at Northeastern, LASO has been able to execute events successfully. LASO does not only believe in promoting leadership within the membership, but also in working together with other student organizations and Northeastern entities in order to accomplish greater goals.
Having began as an organization of 15 members to now over 60 diverse members, LASO has definitely become one of Northeastern's most influential student organizations. As a culmination of the efforts from past years, LASO was recognized with the "Richard E. Sochacki Organization of the Year Award" for 2005-2006. Furthermore, every year more students decide to join us and through excellent leadership, LASO continues to grow and succeed. One common trait that LASO members have is that we are dedicated to the advancement of the Latin American culture and the preservation of our identity.
